Spotlight On The Builds - Why Didn't I Think Of This Sooner???

 


I realize it's been a minute since I've posted here. My original intent was to do sort of a little "journal" as I built instruments, share some hints and tricks I learned along the way, and give folks something to get inspired with to build their own instruments. I dropped the ball, but I thought to myself that maybe something else I needed to do was share my completed instruments, because why would you even bother taking "advice" when you didn't even know if my work sucked or not? 

So I'll still try to do better with dropping in to talk about some building techniques and tips, but I'll also post every couple weeks or so and showcase the builds themselves. I'll hopefully inspire you to think "outside the box", or if you're interested in supporting an independent mad-scientist like myself, you can reach out to buy one of my builds (or commission your own creation!).

"Brown Sugar" - Keith Richards (Micawber) Inspired CBG

  After building this one, I no longer have much faith in claims of "tone woods", because this one NAILS the tone from The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up"... I had an aging Telecaster neck pulled off an actual Tele, along with the bridge, control plate and enough other bits and pieces to put together a rough yet regal CBG that could pay tribute to arguably one of the (if not THE) most beloved Telecasters of all time. Of course, to be right, it HAD to have the all-maple neck and a PAF style humbucker in the neck position (flipped with the polepieces away from the neck). How Do My CBGs Compare to Others?

There are generally two types of people: those who know what a cigar box guitar (CBG) is---at least conceptually--and those who have never seen or heard of them. Most folks who grew up here in Appalachia have seen a washboard or jug used as accompanying instruments, and some might even know what a "washtub bass" is. But our culture nationwide is so familiar with guitars, banjos and mandolins as "the norm" that we don't really think too much about how folks who might not have had access to those types of stringed instruments might have made their own music outside of homemade drums, whistles and primal clanging of household items. Truth is though, some scrap wood, a cigar box, a few nails, screws and other random bits and pieces, some wire and a few handtools, and boom . About Lane Cigar Box Guitars

Introduction... Let's start out by acknowledging that I am not a "luthier". Those guys are trained, experienced and skilled at doing fine finish-work, building instruments from raw materials, and creating premium/boutique instruments for the most discerning players. Don't insult them by referring to me as a "luthier".
