AFQB Short-Scale Bass - Low-end Love with a Cigar Box Guitar!

Image
I found several Arturo Fuente "Queen B" boxes, and wanted one of them to be a short-scale bass. I had this old pull-off neck (30" scale length) and it just so happened to fit the need nicely, so long as I opted for the "neck joint free of the body" type construction I use on most of my guitar builds. I might could've inset the neck mid-mounting plate, but I wanted to make sure the bridge was solidly mounted, so I went with the end-of-the-body mount. A "P/J" pickup combination with independent volume controls and master tone control seemed appropriate, and I DID (due to the extra real estate on/in the box compared to my other bass builds) also mount a piezo disc under the lid.  The original tuners on the neck had gear issues, so I went ahead and upgraded it to some standard "elephant ear" style tuners.  I thought originally about making this a "piccolo" bass, but opted against it when I had to reverse-shim the neck a little an...

Oliva 135th Anniversary "La Estrato Castro" - A Cigar Box Guitar for the Strat Player???

Image
I've built a couple of custom CBGs based on players' go-to instruments, and one I've been asked to make a couple times is based on a Fender Stratocaster. I build them with my favorite Oliva 135th Anniversary boxes to create another "familiar yet different" instrument that a gigging Stratocaster player can strap on and enjoy. It's got some bumps and bruises I touched up a little (common on these upcycled cigar boxes, especially these glossy lacquered boxes), but as you can see, definitely a looker, and it does "the Strat thing" wonderfully! It comes with a basic toploader hardtail bridge, 3 "Strat-style" ceramic single-coil pickups bring you the noise (inside is shielded, so not “too much noise”, mind you), mounted in black/white/black 3-ply pickup rings. I used a traditional style 5-way blade and loaded it with the vol (magnetic pickups)/master tone/vol (under-lid passive piezo) configuration, exiting through the classic "football...

Thinking Outside the Box (Tips, Tricks and Hints) - Question from a Fellow CBG Builder : How to Mount a Bridge Without Losing that Hollow Goodness

Image
A fellow builder wrote in with a question that I thought other builders might also have... "Hey! I'm making an acoustic 6 string CBG and I stumbled on your page. I was hoping you could help me figure some things out. I see you use electric bolt on necks which is what Im doing since I don't have the means to fabricate my own thru-body neck and 6string thru-bodies are impossible to find. How do you attach your necks to your bodies? I went to home depot and got them to cut a 2x4 into a bunch of pieces so I can bolt (screw) the neck on top one of those and essentially turn it into a thru body extension, will that be strong enough? I was also going for a trapeze tailpiece and bridge setup since I figured I couldn't put any load on the box lid. I see you've attached several load bearing bridges to lids tho, I was wondering how you did that and if thats possible on an acoustic setup? I figure you'd just mount it to the thru-neck thru the lid but with mounting the nec...

"Lil' Bastard" Mk1 Short Scale Children's/Travel Cigar Box Guitar

Image
Here's one for the kids...or little folks...or travel...or open-tuned, pseudo-lap-steel-ish slide playing.  This cute little Avo Uvezian box was the perfect match for this maple neck, pulled off of one of those weird guitars supposedly meant for children that come in a 19 & 3/4"-ish scale--you know, the ones that never play or intonate properly (super-short-scale guitars being so finicky about intonation and whatnot), and they usually end up being discarded or used as wall art. Not this one.  Due to aforementioned tuning/intonation/scale issues that come with these "shawties", I have set this one up for mostly open-tuning (G), preferably with a bottleneck slide.  In that sense, it works well and sounds KILLER thanks to a piezo disc paired unconventionally with a custom single-coil pickup made especially for us DIY cigar box guitar builders (the MGB "Five Dolla' Make it Holla' Pickup", if memory serves), each with their own independent volume c...
