"Tay"-k 2? Tay liked his golden-hardware-equipped Truckster so much that he ordered a second immediately. This one he was sharing with his uncle, and was to be a hardtail version, but otherwise the same instrument. What an awesome nephew, right???


So I basically built a clone of Tay's, just with a Wilkinson top-loader "Strat"-style bridge instead of the tune-o-matic bridge and vibrato tailpiece. Like with Tay's vibrato-equipped model, the "HT" still features a pair of Firebird-style pickups (with independent volumes, master tone and a 3-way switch) plus a hidden piezo disc with a volume control for the nasty lo-fi old-school CBG tones.


As you can see, it turned out very nice, with all the same tones and playability as the previous one.


I have to say, while I personally have never been a huge fan of gold hardware, it seems to really work on these, giving them an elevated classiness that just "pops". 


The neck features matching gold split-shaft vintage-style tuners and string trees, just like its predecessor.


It sounds funky and snappy, but with a good amount of growl and bite when you pair it with some overdrive. An awesome Christmas gift for a lucky uncle!

  After building this one, I no longer have much faith in claims of "tone woods", because this one NAILS the tone from The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up"... I had an aging Telecaster neck pulled off an actual Tele, along with the bridge, control plate and enough other bits and pieces to put together a rough yet regal CBG that could pay tribute to arguably one of the (if not THE) most beloved Telecasters of all time. How Do My CBGs Compare to Others?

There are generally two types of people: those who know what a cigar box guitar (CBG) is---at least conceptually--and those who have never seen or heard of them. Most folks who grew up here in Appalachia have seen a washboard or jug used as accompanying instruments, and some might even know what a "washtub bass" is. But our culture nationwide is so familiar with guitars, banjos and mandolins as "the norm" that we don't really think too much about how folks who might not have had access to those types of stringed instruments might have made their own music outside of homemade drums, whistles and primal clanging of household items. Truth is though, some scrap wood, a cigar box, a few nails, screws and other random bits and pieces, some wire and a few handtools, and boom . Introduction... Let's start out by acknowledging that I am not a "luthier". Those guys are trained, experienced and skilled at doing fine finish-work, building instruments from raw materials, and creating premium/boutique instruments for the most discerning players.
