Padron Duo-Shawty - Short-scale CBG

 

I came across a neat short-scale neck---kind of like a Fender Duo Sonic scale (22"-ish)---and thought it would make for an awesome build with one of my leftover Padron boxes. 

I love the Padron cigar boxes, and they make terrific CBGs, but admittedly to my eyes they always seem (at least to my eye) to be a little on the small side (a little narrow from bass-bout to treble-bout). But knock a couple inches off the scale length of the neck, and it's a perfect fit! 


This is a straight-to-the-point CBG loaded with dual-single-coil pickups, as well as the obligatory hidden piezo. An independent volume control for all three pickups, and a master tone control keeps it simple while offering tonal versatility. A hardtail Strat-style bridge gives it stability, intonation control and contemporary playability. All-killer, no-filler and ready to inspire!

  After building this one, I no longer have much faith in claims of "tone woods", because this one NAILS the tone from The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up"... Thinking Outside the Box (Tips, Tricks and Hints) - Need a Basic DIY Tailpiece for your 6-string CBG? No Problemo!

Recently I decided I was going to do my most "rustic" build yet. I wanted to use a pull-off neck from some thrift-shop score (a no-name Strat clone that I just bought for the neck and the pickups/wiring-harness, paying the princely sum of $30), but otherwise I was going to try to make a real "tool-shed special", even fabricating a bridge out of some kind of scrap wood or metal, and keeping the electronics simple (maybe just a pair of piezo discs and a single volume control). Bare-bones, bare-minimum but still with my "real 6-string guitar" methodology. I had it all more or less conceptualized in my brain, except I couldn't come up with an acceptable tailpiece/string-anchor. Argh!!! Then it hit me... What do you need for a tailpiece? Simple: a way to attach it to the body behind the bridge, and six holes or slots to hold the string-end "balls".
